SAE8620 Alloy Steel
Product Overview
SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is a low-carbon, Ni-Cr-Mo alloy case-hardening steel designed for components requiring high surface hardness and superior core toughness. Characterized by its excellent carburizing properties, SAE 8620 delivers an optimal balance of wear resistance, fatigue strength, and impact resistance. It is the premier choice for heavy-duty transmission parts that must withstand extreme mechanical loads and abrasive conditions in the automotive, oil & gas, and general engineering industries.
1. SAE8620 Alloy Steel Typical Chemical Composition
C=0.18-0.23,Mn=0.70-0.90,Ni=0.40-0.70,Cr=0.40-0.70,Mo=0.40-0.60,Si=0.15-0.25,P&S≤ 0.035
2.SAE8620 Alloy Steel Mechanical Properties (Typical Core Properties after Case Hardening)
Tensile Strength: 700 - 1100 MPa (Depending on section size)
Yield Strength: ≥ 550 MPa
Surface Hardness: 58 - 63 HRC (After carburizing & quenching)
Core Hardness: 25 - 40 HRC (Optimal for impact resistance)
3. SAE8620 Alloy Steel Delivery Condition
SAE8620 Alloy Steel is typically supplied in one or more of the following conditions to facilitate subsequent machining and heat treatment:
Hot-Rolled: Cooled in air after hot rolling, has an oxide scale on the surface, low hardness, suitable for machining.
As-Forged: Forged into shape, has a finer grain structure and better mechanical properties.
Annealed: This is the most common delivery condition. After annealing, the structure is uniform, and hardness is low (typically HB 140-170), significantly improving machinability and preparing the material for subsequent processing and carburizing heat treatment.
Normalized: Sometimes supplied in a normalized condition, with properties similar to the annealed condition.
4. SAE8620 Alloy Steel Key Features
Excellent Carburizing Performance: Achieves a hard, wear-resistant case (HRC 60+) while maintaining a tough, ductile core.
Superior Toughness & Ductility: High resistance to shock and impact, preventing brittle failure under sudden loads.
High Fatigue Strength: Designed for rotating components and gears subject to cyclic mechanical stress.
Good Machinability: Offers stable and efficient cutting performance in the annealed or normalized condition.
Reliable Weldability: Can be welded using standard methods, followed by appropriate heat treatment to restore properties.
5.SAE8620 Alloy Steel Applications
SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is almost exclusively designed for parts that require a hard surface and a tough core. Its main applications include:
Automotive & Drive Train: Gears, pinions, crankshafts, camshafts, and spline shafts.
Industrial Machinery: Heavy-duty bushings, piston pins, and rack & pinion sets.
Oil & Gas Industry: Rock bit bodies, tool joints, and valve components.
Bearings: Precision rollers and races requiring high surface durability.
